7 Money Saving Tips For A Greener Office

Do you call your business a “green” business? Are you doing all that you can to help the environment in your daily practices at the office? Sometimes all it takes is a simple reminder to be environmentally-conscious. The following tips will help you develop more eco-friendly habits at the office and allow you to actually call your business and office “green”!

1. Go paperless. We all need to print something out from time to time, but ask yourself before you hit “Ctrl+P”, “Do I really need to print this out?” You can always keep documents as PDF or Word documents and read them on your computer. Electronic records are safer and can be more organized than paper records anyway.

2. Recycle. This seems obvious but some offices don’t recycle! Make recycling all your paper a priority. You can arrange for recycling pick up, drop it off yourself, or recycle in house by using old paper over.

3. Turn off your computer (and monitor!) At the end of the night, there is no reason to keep your computer running. Save power by turning it off. You might have to wait longer for your computer to load the next morning, but it helps your computer to refresh itself in addition to saving power.

4. Buy office supplies in bulk. If you buy your pens, pencils, paper and other needs in bulk, you will save money. This seems obvious, but at the same time, buying in bulk also helps the environment by wasting less packaging and fuel for trips to deliver supplies.

5. Use recyclable cups and plates in your break room. Stock your break room with plates, cups and silverware that is the most easily recyclable. Styrofoam and plastic aren’t the best options for a green office. Ceramic mugs, silverware and ceramic plates are encouraged if a sink is available to was them afterward.

6. Open the shades. If you have windows in your office, use them as much as possible to let light in rather than relying on electricity. This will reduce your energy bills and of course benefit the environment!

7. Recycle computer equipment. Did you know you can donate old computers, modems, printers, etc. to a good cause? Canon, Hewlett Packard, Epson and many others are collecting old equipment to recycle.

Every one of these tips is simple, beneficial for the environment and can save you money. Businesses, small or big, can set the standard through simple green practices that benefit not only the environment but the business itself. Keep these in mind next time you’re in the office!
