Put The Government To Work For You

Starting a home-based business can be as simple as opening starting a blog and as complicated as turning your entire home into command central. But whatever your business needs, you can find great resources at Business.gov, the official US site for all your business questions and concerns.

Their “Home-Based” business section is chalk full of useful links and advice to help you start and maintain your business in a professional and legal manner. Some of the great resources they have include a section what to think about before you begin the process of starting your own business. These include:

Recession Proof Your Business

Although working from home for is a great way to make money with a flexible schedule, you can also be in for a rough time as the economy starts to slide. Many home-based businesses are seen as luxury items which means in a slow economy you’re going to be finding less customers and those you do have will be willing to spend less.

But everything isn’t all gloom and doom for your business. The average recession lasts about 18 months and if you follow a few tried and true strategies that even large corporations use you will be able to weather this one and come out on top.

How To Know What To Charge

When you start a home business, you’ll come across many questions that need to be answered before your company can launch. One of the most important questions is:  What are you going to charge for your products or services?

When setting prices for your home business,  it’s important to strike a balance between making profit and making sure your product or service is affordable for your customer. A great deal of research should go into your company’s pricing system including knowing your industry, considering all your costs and more.

Starting An eCommere Store

In these uncertain times, sometime the thought of starting your own business seems like a great idea. But there are a lot of up-front costs involved in starting a traditional business that can be minimized when you start your own eBusiness. Entrepreneurs are supplementing an existing income while others are making a career by selling on eBay and having their own websites. The basics are not hard to master if you’ve ever spent any time on the web.

Making Lemonade

Yeah, times are tough. Yeah, I know you’ve heard it a million times, just like I have. I feel like the last four months, I’ve woken up to NPR telling me some piece of grim financial news before I’m even out of bed. But don’t despair. There are some ways you can make the best of these rough financial times. It starts with putting a positive spin on whatever negative is being thrown at you.

Spotting a Scam

Unfortunately, because there are so many people who want to make a living working from home, there are a bunch of companies out there that are just scams to get your money or access to your bank account. These companies look just like the legitimate home based business opportunities, so it can be very difficult to spot the scams. Even with all of the home businesses I’ve tested, I sometimes still get hung up on a scam.

Here are some warning signs of a scam. While these don’t automatically mean it’s not legit, they do mean you should proceed with caution:

If You Build It, Will They Come?

Just because you put up a website with your products doesn’t mean you will necessarily get lots of customers flooding in your doors. So how can you get traffic to your website? There are a few different methods you can use:

  • Metatags - make sure the meta tags on your site really focus on your products or services so you are found by the search engines in ways that are actually relevant to your products. If you sell running shoes, don’t put “run” in your meta tags because it’s too general and you’ll get a low rating. Keep your words focused!

How to Save Money When It Comes Time to Hire

As your business grows, you will soon come to a time when you will need to hire others to help with all the work. Even as you start your business, there may be things you just can’t do on your own. But when money is precious, you don’t want to make a hiring mistake. Also, you may not be looking for full- or even part-time employees. If you have a business that has serious ebbs and flows, you can’t really hire someone just for one project and then lay them off, only to rehire someone else when the next big project comes along.

Find Your Rhythm

Each of us has our own rhythm for the day. I personally need to get something done quickly in the morning to get myself on a roll that I can carry through the morning. I save my phone calls for the afternoon if possible because I like to have some uninterrupted time to get those done all at once. I also know that I hit a slump around 4 p.m., so I try to leave some simple tasks for that time period. It might be data collection, or some customer research, but it’s nothing that takes a lot of brain power for me to complete.
