Find Your Rhythm
Each of us has our own rhythm for the day. I personally need to get something done quickly in the morning to get myself on a roll that I can carry through the morning. I save my phone calls for the afternoon if possible because I like to have some uninterrupted time to get those done all at once. I also know that I hit a slump around 4 p.m., so I try to leave some simple tasks for that time period. It might be data collection, or some customer research, but it’s nothing that takes a lot of brain power for me to complete.
Some people are early risers and like to get their work done early in the day. Others like to sleep a little later and work into the evening when others are off work so they can have some peace and quiet all their own. It’s important to be honest with yourself before you launch into your own business so you don’t work something that is completely off schedule from what you like. Night owls, for example, might be suited for office building cleaning and maintenance since that work needs to be done in off hours. Perky morning people may consider opening a coffee shop since they will need to be in and alert early to help greet those morning commuters with a smile and a fresh cup of joe.
Arrange your day to match your personality as well as your energy level. Once you know your rhythm, set up a schedule so you don’t wast time re-thinking every day what task you should move to next. If you are creative in the late morning, save that time for creating your marketing materials. A mid-afternoon slump may be the perfect time to run errands. Setting a schedule can help your customers and clients know when it’s best to reach you and when they are most likely to expect you for meetings.
As always, whenever you work, turn off the TV, close your personal email program, and focus on your business. I find it helpful to set some timers too. When my one-hour timer goes off, I stop my prospecting emails and change to my next task. This keeps me from spending too much time on something I could sink into all day.
