Handyman Service
If you are handy at average home repairs and have your own tools, a handyman service may be the perfect small business that you can open on your own. Handymen are needed all the time for a wide variety of projects, so you’ll need to be able to work confidently on many different types of repairs. The more skills you have - plumbing, electrician, roofing, carpentry, tile, flooring, etc. - the more people will hang on to your phone number as the only one they need. Consider taking a few courses from a professional to learn the trades you don’t already know.
You can advertise your services to number of different target customers:
- Retirees - help those who are less able to handle heavy projects or delicate work
- Single moms - time is a commodity, and they may not have the know-how themselves
- Realtors - a few small repairs may get a better selling price for a home
- Hardware Store Shoppers - they buy the materials but may find they are in over their heads
- New Businesses - connect with your chamber of commerce to help new businesses put on the finishing touches before the grand opening
- New Homeowners - offer your help with all those unexpected projects on their long to-do list
I have hired a handyman to help rebuilt the steps of my porch because I wanted to make sure it was done right. I still was able to help him, so I could learn how it was done, but I needed a professional to help reconfigure the steps that my family would be treading on for years to come. Most handyman services bill on an hourly rate for basic projects and add an extra fee for specialized services like plumbing and electrical work.
You’ll need to provide your own tools, but the customer usually pays for all materials needed for the project. You get to set your own hours that you want to work, and can enjoy the ability to choose your projects. It may be required that you get extra insurance to cover the work that you do. It’s also a good idea to take before-and-after photos of your work to keep a log of all your projects as well as costs and hours to help you bid on future projects.
Handymen are needed in every community. A company I used to work for even hired a local guy to assemble the office furniture the company bought. The job was as easy as following some simple directions, turning a few screws, and collecting a big paycheck for his time. Plus you get a wide variety of jobs so it doesn’t get boring. Put your repair skills to work for you!
