Make Your Own Business Cards

Like any good businessman will tell you, you should always have a business card on you at all times. You never know when an opportunity  to promote your company will pop up and you certainly don’t want to be left empty-handed. But these days, business cards can be expensive. So, instead of shelling out extra cash to have someone else design your business cards, why not design them yourself?

1. A typical business card in the United States is 3.5×2 inches. Create a file in your favorite design program (such as Power Point, Quark Express, Gimp) with these dimensions.

2. It’s important to keep your business or profession in mind when designing your business card. Certain expectations come along with every industry and you want to make sure your image is in line with these expectations. For example, if you’re a designer, make sure your business card lets your potential clients know that you’re creative and edgy. If you’re an accountant, your card should have a more serious, simplistic look. Additionally, make sure your card effectively communicates what type of business you have or work for.

3. Make your name stand out. Be it bolded, capitalized, embossed or what have you, your name should somehow be distinguished from the rest of the information on your card.

4. One business tactic for business cards is to leave one piece of information off your card, like a cell phone number for example. While you want the card to be informative, you also want to be able to add a personal touch by hand writing your cell phone number on the card when you give it to your potential client.

5. Going along with number, leave some blank space on  your card to allow room for your potential client to take notes or for you to add extra information.

We recommend having your business cards printed by a professional. We wouldn’t want a bad printing or cutting job to ruin the impact of your effective business card design. Try PrintPlace.com to print your business card design.

If you still insist on printing your own, be sure to use card stock paper, preferably with some kind of texture.
