Pet Care Opportunities

Pet care is a multi-million dollar a year industry. People love their pets and will do almost anything to keep them healthy and happy. Luckily for you, there are lots of ways to cash in on pet care. For some you will need land, lots of capital, or special training, but the only real necessity for all of them is a love of animals. Take stock of your own personal feelings for dogs, cats, birds, fish and other pets before launching into a career in this field. Do you like all dogs or just your own dog? Do you need to limit your specialty to just cats and fish, or will you take any pet that strolls through your door? Decide these things before working on the rest of your business plan.

Here are some pet care home businesses you could try:

  1. Groomer - A little training with a pro, and you’re ready to groom dogs and cats. You’ll need either a place to wash the pets (in your home or a retail space) or you might have some great success with a traveling grooming business. Just hook up to the customer’s water source and you’re ready to bathe, brush, trim and primp.
  2. Walker - A dog walker is important for a pet’s exercise, and we all know that many people are too busy to walk their own pets every day. You could also tout your offering as a mid-day dog walk while the client is at work. This is appealing because the pet isn’t home alone all day long, plus there’s someone to check on the customer’s house in the middle of the day.
  3. Boarder/Caretaker - You’ll need some land and will need to check your local ordinances. But boarding pets or caring for them in the customer’s home while they are away is a service many people will pay big bucks for!
  4. Trainer - Obedience schools are important for those who can’t train their own pets. This business will require you to have a certain level of authority with all pets and know how hard to push them into following direction of their owners.
  5. Tank Cleaner - Have you seen how many gadgets are needed to clean a fish tank or amphibian cage? Buy the stuff once and clean lots of people’s aquariums and cages for cash. It’s a job they may hate doing, and you get to work with a variety of pets in the process.
