PR Agent - public relations specialist
Are you great at writing? Like talking on the phone with people? Can you be available for public events and help companies put their best foot forward? Then a public relations specialist would be an excellent job for you. And this is one you can do independently for multiple companies at once. Most companies don’t have the budget to keep a full-time PR agent on the payroll full time, so they hire consultants to do the work for them on an as-needed basis.
As a PR agent, you can offer a whole series of services, including:
- Press releases for new hirings, events, products, etc.
- Media contact for news stories or expert commentary
- Suggestions for community events or public support
- Attend fairs/events to help boost your company’s visibility and pass out information
- Assist in writing and designing direct mail pieces
- Spokesperson as needed
For this job, you’ll need excellent communications skills, both written and spoken. You’ll have to be able to spin bad events into good opportunities, and will need to be reachable most hours of the day in case news breaks and your input is needed. It helps to be an easy conversationalist with individuals and groups as you will likely be talking with people at all sorts of events, promoting your company and its products. You’ll need a computer, fax machine, cell phone, and other technological devices to keep in constant contact.
If you do work with multiple companies, make sure you don’t work for those within the same industry. It can look like a conflict of interests to work for a company and its competition at the same time. You’ll have inside information that might prevent you from doing a great job for both companies equally well. Look sharp every day because you never know when photographers or the broadcast media might show up to your events.
