Recreation Center
This is a great business that most communities will support and will fill a need for all ages. A recreation center will be home to lots of great activities that will entertain youth, teens and adults and will provide a great place for people to share in some fun. Lots of communities need something for the kids to do once they get to be teenagers. This would keep them entertained and out of trouble, so lots of towns and parents are willing to help you get a rec center up and running.
The upfront costs may be high, as you will need a location that is centrally located (which will probably mean higher rent since it will be a prime location) as well as all the activities. But check for grants or community funds as this will likely be seen as a benefit for youth programs. Consider providing the following:
- Pool tables
- Dart boards
- Pinball machines
- Arcade games
- Board games and tables
- A snack and soda bar
- Study tables or rooms
Team up with schools and your local chamber of commerce to promote your recreation center as a place for gathering, tutoring, tourists, and evening activity. You’ll probably want to open a little later in the morning - say around 11:00, and stay open into the evening to make the most of your customers who are looking for something to do after work or school. You’ll need to provide staff to monitor the customers, and the number will depend on how big your town in and how popular your center becomes. Use vibrant colors and a fun name to get attention and make it seem more upbeat.
There are lots of ways to get equipment at a discount. Check the classifieds or sites like Craig’s List for people who are selling their pool tables and family room games at a big discount (I just saw a pool table listed in the paper for just $500!). Try to add at least one new component a month once you are open to keep the center fresh and new, and so people will continue to come back for more fun. This is a business opportunity that will make you feel great because you are providing a service to the community and families, and you’ll be known as the person who brought fun to your town.
