Traveling Computer Setup and Training

You don’t have to be a certified computer technician to help people get the most out of their computers. You can travel to them to get a new computer set up correctly and linked up to their printers, Internet connections, and ancillary devices. You can also give them training about how to use basic programs and get their desktops set so they can find the programs they will use most often.

This is an excellent business opportunity for someone who works well with both people and computers. You’ll have to be able to think on your feet and troubleshoot during setup so everything works seamlessly. And you’ll need to be friendly and a good teacher for those who are possibly scared of the technology they are trying to use. They are looking for someone who can help them understand how things interact, and you’re their one-on-one instructor for everything from basic word processing to downloading music and syncing their iPod.

You may find there is an excellent market in your area for ongoing lessons with individuals. People learn best when it’s done in small segments and they can master a few things with each lesson. Then just review the previous lessons and build on what they already know. Depending on the person, you may be able to teach an entire program in one hour, or you may simply focus on how to open and close a file. The important thing to remember is that they set the pace, and that you get paid by the hour.

Some of the best marketing methods will be in the classifieds or an ad in the paper (remember, many of these people may not be on email yet) as well as flyers at your library or any public place. You may be able to arrange with a few retail shops in your area that carry computers for them to include your business card or flyer with each computer purchase. If they don’t have a support team of their own, you can capitalize on their customers.
