Treehouse Builder

Childhood is a magical time. And many parents are willing to spend a lot of money making their children happy, especially around the holidays. This past Christmas, I watched as one of my friends gave her children their very own treehouse. She had paid a local carpenter to build it while they were at school in a far corner of their yard, and she kept it hidden by a tarp she told the kids was protecting her bushes from the cold winds of winter. Christmas morning, she had removed the tarp and showed off their brand new treehouse.

But the more I look into treehouses, there’s nothing that says they are just for kids. In fact a treehouse is a great way to build your own office or work space that it away from the house without being too far away from it. You could create a studio space for writing, crafting, art, or really any home business. Wireless routers are strong enough now to reach from your home base to a treehouse in your backyard, so you can have Internet access and electricity out there.

There are so many fun and wonderful aspects to being a treehouse designer and builder.

  • More creative than a home builder
  • Fewer permits and building codes to consider
  • A huge variety of placements to incorporate
  • The joy of making kids happy
  • For nonstructural parts, you can use reused or found supplies
  • Each treehouse is unique with its own theme/goals

Tree houses don’t necessarily need to be in trees, so you may also be building on stilts or the ground. You can market you services to both parents and at-home workers. I’ve seen treehouses that have plumbing and heat as well as those that are just quiet outdoor rooms for a little extra space. You’ll want to get a clear idea from your customers what they need before you start generating designs for them. Tap parents’ groups, school events, and toy stores as a places to advertise your children’s treehouses. Adult treehouses can be marketed through any social gathering including book clubs, your chamber of commerce, networking clubs, and other professional gatherings.

There are lots of places to get some treehouse ideas. Start with this articlefrom a West Coast newspaper, and then check out treehouse websites here, here and here.
