If You Build It, Will They Come?

Just because you put up a website with your products doesn’t mean you will necessarily get lots of customers flooding in your doors. So how can you get traffic to your website? There are a few different methods you can use:

  • Metatags - make sure the meta tags on your site really focus on your products or services so you are found by the search engines in ways that are actually relevant to your products. If you sell running shoes, don’t put “run” in your meta tags because it’s too general and you’ll get a low rating. Keep your words focused!
  • Write Content - include a few pages on your website that have articles that have lots of your keywords and search terms. One article that uses your keywords often will boost how high up in the listing your site appears for that word. Just make sure your article is related directly to your product. If you sell running shoes, write about how to select the perfect pair, and use the words “running shoes,” “jogging shoes,” and similar terms often in your article.
  • Share Links - do link swapping with related websites. If you find a company that sells just running apparel, see if they would put a link to your website on their site, and you put a link to them on your site. The more links you share on related sites, the more likely people will find you.
  • Use The Blogs - write some entries that include your website on related blogs. This is another great way to promote the articles you have written and posted on your site - just summarize the article in your posting and refer people to the full text using a link to your site.
  • Include Your URL In Everything - You have a website, so promote it! Make sure your URL is listed on everything from business cards and letterhead to posters, ads and your emails. The more places you place it, the more likely it is that someone will click on it.

You may also find it helpful to use Google Analytics to track your website’s traffic. You can see how many visitors you have each day as well as where they are coming from, how long they spend on your site, and other important information.
